The historic centre of excellence for perfumes and flavourings, Grasse now has a new technology platform for characterising natural extracts which will help to grow the natural products industry.
Natural products have experienced continued growth for several years and offer development prospects for the perfumes and cosmetics industry. However, harnessing the benefits of complex natural substances is a true challenge for scientists.
Created by the PASS Cluster, the CNRS, the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and the professional trade association, PRODAROM, the objective of ERINI (European Research Institute on Natural Ingredients) is to acquire the knowledge, technology and expertise to help to advance further in this field, develop our natural resources and make it a major benefit for the entire industry.
Involving researchers, ERINI simultaneously implements a unifying scientific programme under the responsibility of its Scientific Council and collaborative research projects, open to the specific requirements of all organisations in the industry.
ERINI also develops central databases presenting information about natural extracts and training courses suited to companies' needs.
Based in Grasse, on the symbolic site of the former Roure perfume factory, the ERINI platform is equipped with cutting edge analysis instruments.
The platform aims to become an international excellence laboratory in the field of characterising key natural extracts:
- The study of deterioration mechanisms for products in the perfume industry (e.g. oxidation reactions) and the characterisation of ageing by-products and/or potential allergens.
- The identification and quantification of substances in extracts to improve the development of natural raw materials on other markets (pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, etc.) and also control their quality (search for products or contamination residues)
- The authentication of the natural to guarantee the origin and quality of the extracts and thwart fraudulent operations.
Finally, the platform is open to all companies with an analytical problem to which ERINI can provide a scientific and confidential response, either in the form of an R&D service or a partnership.
