MDI has developed a "zero pollution" automobile engine using compressed air as its energy source.MDI Enterprise, which has its global headquarters in Luxembourg but administrative and production facilities in Carros, has developed a "zero pollution" automobile engine using compressed air as its energy source. The engine is capable of driving the compressed air vehicle at a speed of 110 kilometers-per-hour for up to two hundred kilometers in an urban and suburban environment. The cost: 0.75 euros per 100 kilometers, or about ten times less than a conventional gasoline engine. The vehicle was invented by Guy Negre, a sixty-one year old French automotive engineer with over thirty years experience in internal combustion engines. Negre holds over seventy patents which include rotary valve engines, a Formula One engine and engines designed for light aircraft. His company has obtained thirty-six patents in 127 countries for its new automobile. The engine architecture for the "zero pollution vehicle" includes four opposed boxer-type cylinders and a gear box with four forward gears. It involves a patented system with a divided connecting rod, which allows the piston to stop at its top point, and air reservoirs manufactured with wiring on a thermoplastic or aluminium container. The engine, which weighs seventy kilograms, could ultimately be used in boats, industrial tractors and in fixed engine applications. The company will also equip service stations to "refuel" the vehicles.
