The contemporary cultural hub, 109, is preparing to host two renowned exhibitions starting from Saturday, May 13th.
The exhibition titled “1963 : un regard, 60 ans plus tard / 1963: A Look, 60 Years Later” highlights the pivotal year of 1963 in the artistic journey of Bernar Venet.
Having established his studio on Rue Pairolière in Nice that year, Venet was seeking to explore new artistic paths. One evening, as he was leaving his studio, he was struck by a construction site on Avenue de Verdun, where piles of gravel and tar were accumulated. That’s how his iconic artwork, the “Tas de Charbon” (Coal Pile), was born, marking the beginning of a creative development that lasted for several years. This exhibition showcases the artist’s creations during this pivotal period and offers various mediation activities to approach the artworks from different perspectives. Individual and group visits, both with and without reservations, will be organized.
Simultaneously, the exhibition “A la volée” showcases the works of the laureates of the Young Creation Awards 2018 and 2019, namely Mouna Bakouli, Amentia Siard-Brochard, and Johan Christ-Bertrand. These promising artists have received support from the City of Nice, the Venet Foundation, the Bacon Foundation, and the Thorenc d’Art. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, and videos will be exhibited in the Grand Hall of Chantier 109 alongside the creations of Bernar Venet.
A conference on the artist’s international journey will take place on Tuesday, May 16th, at 10:00 AM at the Centre Universitaire Méditerranéen, providing an opportunity for a more in-depth exploration of his work.
Don’t miss these two major exhibitions taking place from May 13th to September 2nd: “1963: A Look, 60 Years Later” by Bernar Venet and “A la volée” showcasing the laureates of the Young Creation Awards 2018 and 2019, supported by the City of Nice and the Venet Foundation.
The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, May 12th, at 12:30 PM, in the presence of Robert Roux, Deputy Mayor in charge of Culture, Bernar Venet himself, and the laureates of the Young Creation Awards 2018 and 2019.
